Wheel Loader Inspection Guide: What to Check Before You Buy
A used wheel loader can be one of the best purchases you make, or one of the most expensive mistakes. The difference comes down to what you checked before you signed anything.
This guide walks through every system to inspect, in order. Bring it with you and work through it item by item. If something does not pass, you have leverage to negotiate or a reason to walk away.

Before You Start
A few ground rules.

- Inspect cold first. A warm machine hides a lot. Arrive before the seller starts it up if you can.
- Bring someone with you. Operational checks need one person in the cab and one outside observing.
- Never approach the articulation joint while the engine is running or the machine can move. Engage the steering frame lock bar first, every time. The same hazard exists during a buyer’s inspection, not just a repair.

System 1: Articulation Joint
Start here. The articulation joint, or center pivot, is what lets the frame bend in the middle so the machine can steer while carrying a full bucket. It carries the entire working load of the machine at that one connection, and it is one of the most expensive things to repair if it fails.

- Confirm the steering frame lock bar is present, not missing, bent, or rusted shut.
- Check the top and bottom pivot pins for grease fittings and look for signs of recent lubrication, not just dry metal or caked dirt.
- Look for oil weeping around the pins and check the steering cylinders for leaks at the rod seals.
- Look underneath the joint for fresh fluid on the ground.

- With the bucket raised, watch the top and bottom pins for visible up and down play. Play here means worn bushings.

System 2: Tires

- Walk all four tires and check tread depth. Uneven wear side to side, or a taper from inside to outside, often points to axle or alignment trouble, not just the tire.
- Check sidewalls for cracking, sun checking, cuts, and bulges. Loaders that sat outside for years often show sidewall dry rot even with decent tread left.
- Look for chunking, missing pieces of tread rubber, common on rock and demolition sites.

Under load
- Drive the machine and listen for thumping or vibration, a sign of internal tire damage that will not show up on the outside.
- Confirm the machine tracks straight and does not pull to one side.

System 3: Hydraulic System

- Look for oil on the ground under the lift cylinders, the tilt cylinder, and the loader arm pivot pins.
- Check the sight glass or dipstick for fluid condition. Clean fluid is amber to light brown; dark, milky, or burnt fluid is a problem.
- Rub the fluid between your fingers. Grit or metal particles mean internal wear.
- Inspect hoses for cracking, bulging, or chafing where the boom moves.
Machine running
- Raise a fully loaded bucket and hold it for two to three minutes. A bucket that drifts down has failing cylinder seals.
- Cycle the bucket through full tilt and dump repeatedly and listen for whining or knocking under load.
- Watch every hose and fitting again once the system is pressurized for new leaks.

System 4: Engine
Cold inspection
- Pull the dipstick. Milky or foamy oil means coolant is mixing in, usually a head gasket or cracked block.
- Check the coolant reservoir for oil contamination and the air filter for dust and neglect.
- Inspect belts, hoses, and radiator fins for damage or packed debris. Loaders work in dusty conditions, and clogged radiators are common.
Starting the machine
- Start it cold and idle 5 to 10 minutes. Light grey or white smoke on startup is normal and clears within a minute.
- Black smoke means incomplete combustion. Blue smoke means the engine is burning oil.
- Listen for knocking. Light valve tick is normal; deep knocking is not.
Once warm: Drive forward and backward on flat ground. Note any hesitation or loss of power. Shut down and check underneath for new fluid.

System 5: Transmission and Drivetrain
What to check
- Check transmission fluid level and condition. It should be bright red or pink, not brown, black, or burnt-smelling.
- Cycle through every forward and reverse gear and note any hesitation, slipping, or delayed engagement.
- Pay attention to the torque converter when you first engage a gear. A long lag before the machine moves points to converter wear.
- Inspect axle housings and differentials for leaks.
- Check axle boots and seals for cracking.
- Test that the parking brake holds the machine on a slope if one is available.

System 6: Bucket and Cab
Bucket
- Check the cutting edge for even wear. One side digging more than the other points to a bent frame or worn pins.
- Grab the bucket and have someone lift and lower it while you watch the pin connections. Any play means worn pins or bushings.
- Inspect welds on the bucket for cracks, especially at the corners and mounting points.
Cab
- Operate every control: joysticks, pedals, switches, and the horn.
- Compare wear on the pedals, seat, and joystick grips to the hour meter reading. Worn controls with low hours is a red flag.
- Check the seat, windows for cracks, and the headliner and floor for water staining.
- Test heat and air conditioning, and confirm warning lights and gauges work at startup.

When to Bring a Professional
If you are not comfortable evaluating these systems, or the machine is high-value enough to justify it, hire a third-party inspector. A professional inspection runs $500 to $1,000 and can surface what is easy to miss without tools: hydraulic pressure testing, oil sample analysis, and a proper measurement of pin and bushing play at the articulation joint. Above $60,000, a professional inspection is worth the cost. The fee is almost always less than the first surprise repair.
